What Is the Yamunotri Gangotri Do Dham Yatra?

The Yamunotri Gangotri Do Dham Yatra is a pilgrimage covering Yamunotri Dham and Gangotri Dham in Uttarakhand.
Yamunotri is associated with Goddess Yamuna, while Gangotri is associated with Goddess Ganga. Both destinations are located in the Garhwal Himalayas and form an important part of pilgrimage travel in Uttarakhand.

This Do Dham route is a practical option for travellers who want to visit Yamunotri and Gangotri without undertaking the complete four-Dham circuit.

The two destinations also offer different travel experiences. Yamunotri requires a walking approach from the Janki Chatti side, while Gangotri is accessible by mountain road. Because of this, the journey should be planned with realistic travel times and some flexibility.

Yamunotri Gangotri Do Dham Yatra Route

A commonly planned route from Haridwar or Rishikesh is:

Haridwar/Rishikesh → Barkot → Janki Chatti → Yamunotri → Uttarkashi → Harsil → Gangotri → Uttarkashi → Haridwar/Rishikesh

The exact route and overnight halts can be modified according to the selected package.

For travellers starting from Delhi, additional travel time is required and the itinerary may need to be extended.

Detailed Yamunotri Gangotri Yatra Itinerary

Day 1: Haridwar/Rishikesh to Barkot

Route: Haridwar/Rishikesh → Barkot
Your pilgrimage begins with a drive towards Barkot through the Himalayan region of Uttarakhand.
Depending on the starting point, the journey can pass through Dehradun and the Mussoorie side before entering the Yamuna valley.
After reaching Barkot, check into the hotel and rest.
Overnight: Barkot
Travel Tip: Mountain driving can take longer than expected because of traffic, road conditions or weather. Avoid planning too many activities on the first day.

Route: Barkot → Janki Chatti → Yamunotri → Janki Chatti → Barkot
After an early breakfast, drive towards Janki Chatti.
The motorable journey ends around the Janki Chatti side, after which pilgrims continue towards Yamunotri by walking route or locally available assistance such as pony or palki, subject to current rules and availability.
Allow sufficient time for the uphill journey, darshan and return.
After visiting Yamunotri Dham, return to Janki Chatti and drive back towards Barkot.
Overnight: Barkot
Important Yamunotri Note
The Yamunotri approach can be physically demanding. Weather, crowd levels and individual fitness can affect the time required. Travellers should maintain a comfortable pace and avoid rushing.

After breakfast, continue towards Uttarkashi.
The road follows the Himalayan valleys and provides views of the surrounding mountain landscape.

The route follows the Bhagirathi valley towards Harsil and Gangotri. Harsil can be included as a scenic stop depending on the final itinerary and road conditions.
Continue towards Gangotri Dham and complete darshan after arrival.
Gangotri is situated at a high Himalayan elevation, so temperatures can be considerably cooler than in the lower valleys.
Overnight: [Gangotri / Harsil / Uttarkashi]

Day 5: Gangotri to Uttarkashi

After breakfast, complete any remaining darshan or local visits at Gangotri and begin the return journey.
Depending on the final package, additional time may be provided around Harsil or other suitable places on the route.

Yamunotri Dham Travel Guide

Yamunotri Dham is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna and is located in the high Himalayan region of Uttarkashi district.

The final approach is different from a normal road journey because travellers need to continue from the road-access point towards the temple.

Before Visiting Yamunotri

  • Wear comfortable walking shoes.
  • Carry rain protection.
  • Keep warm clothing available.
  • Carry water and essential personal items.
  • Start early whenever possible.
  • Allow sufficient time for the return journey.
  • Follow current local instructions regarding pony and palki services.

The exact walking distance and operating conditions can change, so travellers should verify current information before the journey.

Gangotri Dham Travel Guide

Gangotri Dham is associated with Goddess Ganga and is one of the major pilgrimage destinations of Uttarakhand.

Gangotri is connected by road, making its final access different from Yamunotri.

The surrounding Bhagirathi valley, Harsil and other Himalayan landscapes make the journey particularly scenic.

Things to Keep in Mind

  • Carry warm layers.
  • Prepare for changing weather.
  • Keep the itinerary flexible.
  • Follow temple and local administration instructions.
  • Do not assume mountain-road travel times are fixed.
